A Wonderful Learning Journey

When I decided to take ES2007S, I knew that I had to step out my comfort zone, that I had to expose myself to what I am weak in, and that I had to spend a lot of time and effort in the course assignment. Now, at the end of the course, I must say I do not regret of my choice and, if given another chance, I will choose ES2007S again.
If I had not taken this module, I would not give myself a chance for blogging, where I learnt different viewpoints regarding the similar topics. After finishing each post, I enjoyed reading my classmates’ post as well as their comments.  However, I do regret and apologize that I did not participate actively in blogging, being afraid that my poor expression will “spoil” my classmates’ posts.
If I had not taken this module, I would not realize so many problems in my presentation. Fortunately, Ms. Lim and my classmates had pointed out them for me. I will keep these comments in mind and will refer to them when I am giving a presentation in the future.
If I had not taken this module, I would not meet Ms. Lim and my awesome classmates.  Within these thirteen weeks, our friendship is forged through class interactions, blog post comments, presentation evaluations, team projects and lunches after lessons. Because of you, my life of a graduate student was so colorful. Thank you, Ms. Lim and my friends. I wish all of you the best in the future.
 It is the ending time of ES2007S, and it is also the starting time for me to apply what I learned.  I will always remember this wonderful learning journey.

An Amazing Experience

Presentation is a big headache for me as I am not good at speaking in public. When presenting, I become nervous, worried about forgetting my words. This makes my speaking fast and sometimes it is difficult for my audience to follow. This time, it worries me again. As it is a team presentation, I am really scared that my performance will drag our team down. After our proposal is done, my fear is even stronger: the idea is so wonderful and I must make my presentation match it.
In the preparation, I tried to make my presentation easy to follow. My teammates provided many beneficial suggestions, such as using guide postings, making statistics into context, remembering key points other than speech memorization, summarizing in the end etc.
The big day finally came and I was more excited than nervous.  When it was my turn, I spoke loud to calm my nerves. I emphasized our goal and kept the audience informed that I had three points to share. But I could not remember whether I made the whole picture by mentioning the first, second and the third point when they came into places. The survey statistics were put into context and my own experience was added to make it more convincing.
However, being nervous remains my biggest weakness. The pace of my speaking is still a bit fast. More eye contact, gestures and facial expressions could be used. Some powerful words could be employed to show my enthusiasm. The scroll in my hand should be replaced by the laser pointer to make it more professional and less distracting. Also, I did not answer one of the questions politely, being anxious.
On the whole, I really enjoyed the presentation. I would like to thank my teammates Calvin and Lynette (and our demonstrator as wellJ), without whom such an amazing experience would never happen.

Cultural Difference in Counting

Culture is a set of patterns of behaviors and beliefs that is usually formed within a geographical region. Even within China, there are big cultural differences in the southern and the northern parts. For example, in north China, during the first month of the Chinese New Year, those people whose mother has bothers are not allowed to have their hair cut, as it is believed that doing so will bring bad luck or illness to their mothers’ brothers, while people in the south China never believe in this.

It is no surprise that the people from different countries have different ways of expressing themselves. Recall how we count numbers by hand. From the first day of my primary school, I was taught how to count from one to ten using one hand. At the beginning, I thought such counting method was common through out the world. However, I learnt later that European people count using two hands and in some Asian counties people use one hand but in different ways. Interestingly, what the European people mean by two is what Chinese mean by eight and is what Singaporeans mean by seven.

I cannot help laughing when reminiscing about the bargain experience of my Chinese teacher in London. He could not speak English, and used fingers to bargain for a pot with a seller. The seller, using his fingers as well, asked for twenty pounds with the thumb and the index finger. My teacher thought it was eighty pounds and bid for fifty in return, using all five fingers. The seller was quite honest and insisted on twenty pounds. At last, my teacher became very impatient. He just threw fifty pounds to the seller and took away the pot proudly.

Internship – Quantitative Research Analyst

This position entails immediate responsibilities for producing research for our clients worldwide. The successful candidate will make useful suggestions, take initiatives, can be relied upon, and will show accurate quantitative skills. The person will report to the Vice President, State Street Associates.

The candidate will get familiarized with the research State Street Associates produced. As soon as possible, the candidate must be able to produce research reports for our clients worldwide. The candidate must understand basic finance (portfolio construction, e.g. some exposure to constrained optimization theory), computer programming (e.g. Matlab, VBA or C++ for instance, and office software suite is necessary).

The second step will be for the candidate to get involved in customized research projects, and contribute research innovations. Therefore, the candidate should have an interest in learning the latest finance research and understanding how it might be useful to clients. Interpersonal Conflict

This is what happened to me during my last summer holidays in China.

My friend asked me to give tuitions to his sister, who is going to take O-level next year. As I had tuition experience for JC students and was well recognized, I agreed without hesitation. Because of our friendship, it was free.

After a few lessons, I spotted many cumbersome methods she used in her homework. When I seriously pointed these out and asked her to adapt for the efficient methods, she became impatient and non-cooperative, saying “It is fine as long as my answer is correct. You are too harsh.”

Her words angered me and I told her that it was her not me that would suffer. I was here not to be harsh to her but to help her make progress. I was not her enemy but her comrade and O-level was our common enemy.

After saying so much, I left and told my friend that I would not come any more.

Having calmed myself down, I tried to put myself in her shoes. My standard might be too high for her. Maybe it was her first attempt at the questions and she was quite satisfied for the correct answer. At the age of 16, she might need more praise than blame.

It was a painful experience not because I did not get money but because what I did was not recognized. Fortunately, the friendship is still there.

It is unlikely that I would give tuitions again, but there are lessons I can learn from this experience. What do you think?

Why I need effective communication skills?

Effective communication skills are essential for everyone in our daily life. For me, effective communication skills are what I need to improve on.

Frankly speaking, I do not feel comfortable when expressing myself to others, especially strangers. During a conversation, I usually find nothing to say and turn out to be more a quiet listener than an active speaker. When asked some questions I often respond with a one-sentence answer and that is it, making the conversation like one between a pupil and a teacher. Sometimes even when I felt like saying something, I just thought that what I intended to say might not be that necessary or useful so I just kept silent. Perhaps the rigorous training in science makes me believe that everything said must have a reason for saying it.

But just as what my mother reminded me many times, people did not know what you thought unless you spoke it out. In addition, keeping quiet will take others a long time to know what kind of person you are: you might have good personality, but without effective communication, this cannot be discovered unless people have spent a long time working with you. Nobody has the patience to wait for such discovery before they leave you and work with someone who is easy to communicate with.

At first, I did not take her point seriously, thinking that it would be fine as long as in the future I am not in a career which involves a lot of communication. Now, I start to realize that effective communication is such an important tool that everyone must be armed with regardless of what career he is in.
